Vice President For Institutional Advancement Gary Blanchette ’80 and 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient Ken Baldwin ’64 met in Tucson, Ariz., at the home of Charles Tipton ’52 to present him with a citation honoring his leadership and lifelong research and contribution to the fields of exercise science and sports medicine.

Howard “Skip” Knuttgen ’52 met Luc van Loon during the 2017 annual fall meeting of the New England Regional Chapter of the American College of Sport Medicine in Providence, R.I. Van Loon was the internationally distinguished scientist who presented during the meeting’s Howard G. Knuttgen Keynote Lecture.

Lester Lefkowitz, G’56, wrote in to reminisce about his own life. He enrolled at American International College but was drafted to fight in the Korean War. Lefkowitz’s brother wrote to President Truman to ask for Lefkowitz’s deferment, which led to him being sent to Germany. There, Lefkowitz met Ed Simms ’51, who became a Springfield College professor and paid for Lefkowitz’s tuition as he completed a master’s degree at Springfield College.

Bob Camp ’55 let us know that he and his wife, Clarice, their house, and their guests all survived Hurricane Irma. They survived for 10 days with no electricity. Camp notes that the number of years he and Clarice have been retired matches their ages when they began their careers (22 years), and 2018 marks 63 years of marriage. “Not bad—good kids, mostly good health, good wife, good life—thanks for the start SC.”

John Hichwa ’60 was recently inducted into the Joel Barlow High School (Redding, Conn.) Hall of Fame. In attendance were Marion Hichwa ’62, John Hichwa ’60, Joel Barlow High School Athletic Director Mike Santangeli ’97, and Kristen Brown Tartaglia ’93. Hichwa was a physical educator for 35 years and initiated Project Adventures incorporating problem-solving initiatives, ropes courses, and climbing walls, at John Read Middle School. The program is still going strong 35 years after its inception and 22 years after his retirement. John had a direct and positive influence on so many Redding students. Since retiring he has continued to conduct workshops throughout the world.

Susan Barstow Thomas ’61, Valerie Butler Lundberg ’61, Sandra Smith Fort ’61, and Barbra Pedersen Belmonte ’61, recently visited campus for the first time since their 50th reunion in 2011. All four of them lived in Abbey Hall. “It was so rewarding and refreshing to observe the students and to have them smile and say ‘hi,’ just like the tradition expected of us when we were students!”

Steve Gordon ’63, G’67, was featured in an online story on InterMat Wrestling. Gordon started the wrestling program at Cumberland (R.I.) High School 50 years ago, and the 2017-18 season is his last. Gordon’s wife, Judy, became a fixture of the program during his tenure. As a nurse, she would often treat the players’ injuries. Judy became more involved with the team, from running tournaments to stepping in as coach when Gordon had the flu.

James ‘Jim’ Bullock ’65 shared with us that after a 42-year career in education he has recently retired. A physical education major, Bullock taught for two years in New York state and 10 years in New Jersey before relocating to Maryland to pursue a specialty in adaptive physical education. While he also spent time as an elementary school principal and an administrator in transportation, his heart remained with his love of teaching adaptive physical education to students with special needs.

In 1986, his passion and focus for special education led him to create the Tournament of Champions, an athletic event in partnership with McDaniel College (formally Western Maryland College) in Westminster, Md. Bullock identified the demand for an event dedicated to students with orthopaedic, visual, and behavioral needs who don’t qualify for the Special Olympics. Special needs students in kindergarten through 12th grade are paired up with college students. The Tournament of Champions celebrated its 31st year this spring with more than 100 participants from many counties across the state. It is one of Bullock’s proudest achievements.

Bullock was an admired member of the Springfield College cross country and track team and he is still an avid runner today. In 2015, he completed the run leg of a team half Ironman triathlon in Australia. Bullock also has successfully coached many high school cross country and track teams, including a state champion team. While Bullock has officially retired from his lifelong career in education, he continues to be active in the profession via the YMCA of Central Maryland. One afternoon a week he teaches an adaptive physical education class for special needs adults in the community. Bullock has three children, David, Bonnie, and Joy, and five grandchildren. He has been married to his wife Judi for 45 years.

David Behrend ’64 shared with us that he will begin spending time in his native city of Coral Gables, Fla., and hopes to get to College events while there. He still maintains his national practice, counseling and guiding lawyers going through career and employment transitions

The Suburban (Saint Laurent, Quebec) reports that John Elias, G’64, has been inducted into the RDS Baseball Quebec Hall of Fame. Elias was a minor league pitcher for the Kansas City Athletics and Baltimore Orioles before becoming a coach for the Montreal Expos.

Reed Schultz ’66, G’78, Larry Buell ’66, Ralph Arietta ’66, Tony Scolnick, G’64, DPE ’68, Lee Drury ’66, G’68, Ben Davis ’66, G’67, and Bill Scanlon ’66, G’68, all members of the 1965 World Tour men’s basketball team, celebrated their 52nd reunion in Charlottesville, Va. The reunion was organized by Bill and Barb Scanlon.

Ed Purdy ’67 was inducted into the Livingston (N.J.) High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Purdy was the head ice hockey coach, winning the league championship in 1976, the Gordon Cup in 1976 and 1981, the state championship in 1980 and 1982, and became a state championship finalist in 1976 and 1978. He was named the 1981 New Jersey Star Ledger Coach of the Year, inducted into the 2012 New Jersey Ice Hockey Hall of Fame, and is considered the “father of the Livingston High School strength training facility.”

Jeff Craw ’69 has had an interesting life since leaving Alden Street. Tired of school, he dropped out of seminary and began working for United Van Lines, moving folks around the country. He later entered Duke University Divinity School, graduating in 1981, and drove the team bus for the football and basketball teams. After 32 years in the ministry, he retired three years ago and has gone back to driving tractor-trailers. He has begun compiling his writings for a book.

Alan Nero ’69 and Art Ziegler ’70 recently visited Ireland when they randomly bumped into Eugene Markowski ’76. Small world!

Ian Breck ’70 has been inducted into the RBC Wall of Distinction at Bishop University where he was head football coach for 11 years.

Dave Hastings ’71 shared with us that he retired at the end of the June 2017 school year from Southern Berkshire Regional School District where he served as superintendent for four years. He also taught math and served as curriculum coordinator, in addition to retiring from the U.S. Army in 2005 as chief warrant officer five.

Dave Gettleman ’72 has been hired as general manager of the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). Gettleman had served as general manager for the Carolina Panthers, winning three consecutive NFL South titles.

According to NC Advertiser (New Canaan, Conn.), Lou Marinelli ’72, head coach of the New Canaan High School football team, earned his 332nd win, making him the all-time win leader in Connecticut high school football history.

Fletcher continues coaching TV, film, and theater actors and teaching in the Master of Fine Arts drama program at New School University and the William Esper Acting Studio, New York.

Peter Chandler ’75 let us know that he and his family are doing well in Erie, Colo. His children, quintuplets, turned 28 this year, while his oldest son turned 33. Peter and his wife will retire at the end of the school year and look forward to visiting Springfield College to see all of the changes.

A group of alumni, including Larry Tremblay ’77 and Phil Capodilupo ’76, gathered with other wrestling alumni at Tremblay’s home in North Reading, Mass. More than 24 wrestling alumni from all over the country came to the event, including current head coach Jason Holder and four of his current wrestlers. Tremblay was recently inducted into the Massachusetts chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He has recorded 711 wins for Winchester High School, where he has coached for more than 34 years.

Lt. Col. Daniel S. Zulli ’77 has retired from active duty in the United States Air Force after 30 years of service, six years enlisted and 24 years as a chaplain. Thank you for your service!

According to Star Adviser (Honolulu), Mark Banker ’78 has been named assistant head coach/linebackers coach for the University of Hawai’i football team.

John Lyons ’78, G’79, shared with us that he has been inducted into the Winthrop (Mass.) High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In fact, it was Lyons who started the Athletic Hall of Fame at Winthrop High School.

Michael Orstein ’78, G’79, has retired as head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at Washington & Jefferson College. Throughout his career, he has received 15 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach (PAC) of the Year awards; produced eight national champions, 17 All-Americans, 36 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship qualifiers; and has coached his teams to nine PAC titles, 221 school records, and 61 conference marks. He retires with a career record of 545-244-4. That’s quite a career, coach!

The Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) has announced that Branwen Smith-King ’78, G’79, will be its new program coordinator. She will be responsible for the BOA’s participation in the Olympic Solidarity and Pan American Sports Organization programs.

Gwendelyn Rhett ’79 has retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “SC had a huge impact on my life,” she says, writing that by embracing the Humanics philosophy, and keeping the perspective of the whole person—in spirit, mind, and body—she was better able to assist others. “Thank you Springfield College!”

Laurel Greco Vicidomino ’79 wrote to say that she and classmates Eileen Sears Bow and Terese Saletnik Mazik, along with Lisa Raccaro Sacramone ‘ 80 and Nancy Vitalone Raccaro ’80 have been having mini reunions at least once a year—at her house in Connecticut and recently in Pompano Beach, Fla. She reports that they have remained the best of friends since graduation.

Columbia University has announced that Bob Steitz ’80, G’81, has been named senior associate athletics director for external affairs. Steitz will be responsible for the strategic direction, oversight, coordination, leadership, and active participation in revenue generation and external functions.

Springfield College swimming alumnus and head swimming coach at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Tim Flannery ’86 was named Kutztown Employee of the Month for January. Track student-athlete Dontez Jolly nominated Flannery, who has been at Kutztown for 22 seasons, for taking time each week over a two-month period to teach Jolly to swim. The pair met every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. during November and December. In his nomination of Flannery, Jolly wrote, “To help someone face a giant that has been holding them down their entire life is something worthy of employee of the month.”

Cindy Best Burney ’88, G’89, informed us that her book, Meet Me Where I’m At , was published by Future Horizons, the leading publisher in autism-spectrum disorder topics. She is also the creator of A.R.T.S. (Adaptive Art, Respite & Therapeutic Play Services), a nonprofit organization in New Hampshire that offers extracurricular activities and summer programs to children and adults with special needs. A.R.T.S. was designed to help each student identify their individual strengths, incorporate therapeutic goals into their art projects, develop recreational activities, practice peer interactions, and explore vocational skills.

Mark Laurenzano ’88, dean of students at M. Marcus Kiley Middle School in Springfield, recently visited the campus with a group of Kiley students, who received a tour and had a question-and-answer period with student ambassadors.

Gregory Thielman ’88, G’81, has been promoted to full professor at University of the Sciences, Philadelphia, where he has been on faculty since 2005 and tenured since 2011. He says he is enjoying great research collaborations nationwide as he continues his work to improve function and quality of life for individuals who have had a stroke.

Jim Liston, G’92, was featured in a MassLive.com story. Liston is the sports science director for the Major League (MLS) Soccer Toronto FC team, and is responsible for supervising the strength and conditioning programs for the players. Prior to his current position, Liston had served as strength and conditioning coach with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Columbus Crew, and Chivas USA of MLS.

During a Change of Command ceremony, Col. Bradley C. Nindl, G’93, PhD, FACSM, assumed command of the Southeast Medical Area Readiness Support Group (SE-MARSG) in Nashville, Tenn. The SE-MARSG has 2,000 soldiers and provides support, command, and control for 24 direct reporting units that include medical backfill battalions, medical support units, troop medical clinics, veterinary, and blood detachments throughout the southeastern United States. Nindl also recently came across Francisco Rivera ’98, while participating in Army Reserve Training at Fort McCoy, Wis. Rivera is an occupational therapist at the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Matt Calendrillo ’04, G’05, (featured in Triangle 86.1) founder and co-owner of Live Every Day, a Connecticut physical therapy, orthotic bracing, and prosthetic company, has teamed with The Gengras Center School at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. The center educates and helps students ages 5 to 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities by facilitating learning, social communication, and independence. Matt and his team were asked to bring their skills of functional movement, assessment, and orthotic bracing to aide in these children’s performance in their community.

Art Howell ’06 has been named to Madison365’s Black Power list, a list of the most influential black leaders in Wisconsin. In 2012, Howell became the first black police chief of Racine, Wis. He oversees a force of more than 200 officers and manages an annual budget of more than $26 million. You make us proud, Art!

The University of Minnesota Duluth has announced that Anthony Morando ’07 has been hired as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.

Kendrick T. Roundtree ‘07, G’09, was named valedictorian at the 2017 Class of 100 Men of Color Black Tie Gala and Awards, which recognize men in business, education, entrepreneurship, entertainment, government, and service who positively impact their communities. He is president and CEO of the First Step Foundation in Farmington, Conn., and director of student supports at Dean Technical High School. He previously was recognized by the Hartford Business Journal as a “40 Under Forty” recipient. He says that he is “unapologetically dedicated to helping underrepresented students graduate from college.”

Christopher Quetant ’11 and Greg Woods ’16 connected while Woods was interning with the NCAA in Indianapolis. Quetant gave Woods a tour of the USA Track & Field national office and introduced him to some co-workers. “He is a bright young man and is definitely doing us Springfield alum proud,” Quetant said of Woods. During Hajj, the first day of Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Jamal Rashwan ’15 directed responses to the health emergencies of the 1.4 million pilgrims. He worked 16 and 20 hour shifts, helping people from every country. Muslims perform Hajj to cleanse their souls and revive their relationship with God.
