SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Springfield College Department of Physical Therapy hosted the annual Greene Memorial Lecture featuring Kathleen K. Mangione, PT, PhD, GCS, on Thursday, April 11, at the Appleton Auditorium in the Fuller Arts Center.  Mangione’s presentation, “Raising the Bar for Hip Fracture Recovery,” focused on the effects of strength training and endurance training on older adults after hip fracture.  The lecture was free and open to the public.

Mangione is a professor of physical therapy at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa., and has given multiple presentations on the topics of exercise and the older adult, hip fractures, and frailty.  She also is the current site principal investigator on a multicenter clinical trial that examines intervention for frail older adults after hospital discharge, collaborating with investigators from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, Dartmouth University, and the University of Connecticut.

Mangione was among the first 14 specialists to earn board certification in geriatric physical therapy.  She has practiced in acute care, adult inpatient rehabilitation, sub-acute and nursing home settings, and home health care.

The Greene Memorial Lecture is the premiere scholarly event of the Springfield College Department of Physical Therapy.  The lectureship was initiated in memory of Jean Greene by her husband, Edwin Greene, who graduated from Springfield College in 1935.
