What do art therapists do?

Career paths for art therapists

Art therapists are clinicians with a master’s degree or higher who work with adults, children, adolescents, and older adults. They utilize art as a means to treat a variety of emotional issues and to provide a sense of wellness and healing.

Art therapists use a variety of arts-based techniques in their assessment and treatment of clients, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Through art therapy, the therapist provides an opportunity for non-verbal expression and communication that can promote a reconciliation of emotional conflicts as a coping mechanism for trauma, and foster self-awareness and personal growth.
