What it Means to Wear THE Jersey | Springfield College

Jen (Svatik) McCarthy ’02

When I first stepped onto the campus of Springfield College as a high school student, I thought I would be making a decision that would impact the next four years of my life. Little did I know the decision to attend Springfield College to play women’s volleyball would have implications that reached far beyond those four years. It would truly change the course of my life.

As a member of the women’s volleyball team, I was a part of something greater than myself. I was a part of a tradition and family, a sisterhood of sorts, with whom I would share some of life’s greatest lessons. Every time I put on the maroon and white jersey with the word ‘Springfield’ emblazoned on the back, I felt a great sense of pride. The jersey was a representation of so many things. It symbolized hard work, dedication, teamwork, perseverance, grit, passion, camaraderie, and above all, friendship. I will forever be changed as a result of wearing that jersey.

Springfield College is a special place. Those who have been lucky enough to call this place home for a short time know the impact it can have. It’s no surprise that you’ll find a Springfield College alumnus in every corner of every place in this world. It’s our mission to give back to others and to represent what this great institution stands for. It is, without question, one of life’s greatest honors to stand among those who came both before and after me.
