Exemptions From The English Language Proficiency Requirement

Some non-U.S. students may be exempt from the English language proficiency requirement. You may be exempt from taking an English language proficiency test if you:

  • Live in an English-speaking country / English is an official language of your country
  • Can document that the language of instruction for your secondary or undergraduate degree was English
  • Submit Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) scores that meet admissions requirements / Passing College credit (C or higher) from U.S. College or University in ENG 101 or higher

Exemptions are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.

English Language Learning

Students who do not meet English language requirements may be eligible for a conditional acceptance. Students with a conditional acceptance are required to take English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, and may be awarded an unconditional offer upon successful completion of pre-approved ESOL classes, an acceptable score on an English language proficiency test, or upon recommendation from ESOL faculty.

International Language Institute of Massachusetts

If you have received a conditional acceptance contingent upon English language proficiency, or if you would like to improve your English before beginning your degree program, we encourage you to attend the International Language Institute (ILI) of Massachusetts located in nearby Northampton, Mass. Students who satisfactorily complete the advanced level of the ILI’s Intensive English Program are exempt from taking the TOEFL or any other language test for admission to Springfield College.
