Academic Progress Program | Springfield College

The Academic Progress Program is designed to provide assistance and support to help improve academic skills, performance, and standing for the students on academic warning and academic probation. For more information on academic standings, review the Academic Progress Policy in the College Catalog.

Additionally, graduate students granted Conditional Acceptance will participate in the Academic Progress Program (see Graduate Admissions Decisions in the College Catalog).

The Academic Progress Program offers:

  • An important and detailed letter from the associate vice president for academic affairs explaining the student's academic standing and its consequences.
  • An initial academic assessment and academic progress orientation session at the start of the semester with an academic coach.
  • Meetings with an academic coach to assist with time management, learning strategies, referrals to campus resources, and monitoring academic progress.
  • If needed, assistance with appealing Financial Aid Probation.
  • Gathering of faculty feedback to support student success.
  • Mid-semester grades consultation to continue to track student academic progress

Academic Progress Orientation Sessions

These sessions are designed to give students an overview of the program and opportunities to ask questions, become familiar with various academic resources, and set ongoing coaching appointments. Sessions include:

  • An overview of the wide-ranging services and programs offered by the College.
  • An explanation of the academic coaching process and expectations of the 3-Strike Rule.
  • A summary of key College policies, such as CGPA requirements, Satisfactory Academic Progress, and repeat course policy.
  • A chance to review before the add/drop period ends the student’s current course schedule to ensure it is optimized for success.

The 3-Strike Rule:

Students in the Academic Progress Program are required to set up regular coaching times with their coach and then attend those sessions.  The 3-Strike Rule stresses the importance of student participation in the Academic Progress Program.

  • Strike 1 occurs if a student has a first unexcused absence from a scheduled coaching session. The student will be contacted by the academic coach to make up the missed appointment.
  • Strike 2 occurs if a student has a second unexcused absence from a scheduled coaching session. The student is required to meet with the Academic Progress Leader to discuss what barriers are interfering with the student from attending regular coaching appointments.
  • Strike 3 occurs if a student has a third unexcused absence from a scheduled coaching session. The student is required to set up a meeting with Elizabeth Morgan, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, to explain why the students is out of compliance with the conditions of academic probation or warning.

Students on academic warning and academic probation who have questions may consult with their Academic Progress Leader:

  • Paige Konstant, the Assistant Director of the Academic Advising Center, is the first-year success coordinator.
  • Andrew Wilcox, the Director of the Academic Success Center, is the Academic Progress Leader for main campus upper class and graduate students
  • Camille Elliott, ASC Associate Director of Student Services, is the Academic Progress Leader for regional campus and online undergraduate and graduate students
