Springfield College now offers dual certification in physical education and health/family and consumer sciences for elementary and secondary levels.  

This dual licensure program gives Springfield College students a unique advantage by preparing them to become teachers of physical education and health/family and consumer sciences for all grade levels in just four years. 

Graduates of the program will earn a bachelor’s degree and be certified in elementary and secondary physical education and health/family and consumer sciences. Dual certification across all grades will make graduates more marketable and give them a wider range of employment opportunities.

The Program

Springfield College now offers dual certification in physical education and health/family and consumer sciences for elementary and secondary levels.

Through this dual licensure program, students will:

  • Equip themselves for a successful career in the exciting field of education
  • Benefit from a curriculum that integrates health and physical education content, teaching methods, and substantial hands-on practical experiences
  • Enjoy practical experience with students of all ages beginning in their first academic year, and continuing throughout all four years
  • Prepare to meet all requirements needed to complete the state-approved teacher licensure programs for grades PreK-12
  • Help improve the health and wellness of society by working with the most educable population—school-age youth; foster a healthy lifestyle by promoting the value of physical activity and good nutrition
  • Become more marketable upon graduation, and have enhanced employment opportunities

This program aligns with the national and state standards. Close attention will be paid to preparing candidates for successful completion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL), as well as PRAXIS tests in states nationwide.

With its strong heritage and storied history, the Physical Education and Health Education (PEHE) Department is the largest faculty body at Springfield College. The department is composed of more than 30 physical education teacher educators, health educators, and teacher-coaches.

PE HE Dual Degree CertificationFaculty members take pride in working closely with students in their roles as teacher educators, instructors of professional activity classes (e.g., volleyball, racket sports, etc.), and academic advisors.

Add to that their own scholarship and leadership in the discipline—faculty members hold leadership positions in local, regional, and national associations—and students could not have better role models or a more supportive environment in which to become a health and physical educator.

Program Requirements

Maintenance of a 3.0 overall GPA / 3.25 professional GPA
Completion of Application for Admission to Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Program
Completion of 131 credits (within tuition costs)

Curriculum

This program provides a comprehensive understanding of the scientific and social foundations of movement and its cultural forms of dance, sport, games, and exercise, as well as the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate health programs.
